Family Math Coaching and Consulting
Math FAQs
Math has always been a tricky subject for many people. Now more than ever, kids are struggling and parents are worried. Teachers and schools are feeling overwhelmed as well. As a parent, I understand deeply how hard it is to watch your children struggle. As an educator, I see the need for more direct and individualized support for families trying to navigate math instruction that looks and feels different. Because family math coaching is such a new concept to most people, I enjoy offering a single session package as an introduction to what I do. In a single session I can listen, answer some questions, and offer a few specific resources for your family's unique needs. We can discuss homework battles, math facts, or how to support your child's math development at all ages.
My signature program involves working with families over several sessions to create lasting change around math. I believe that meaningful change in families takes time and requires starting with the adults. That's why I work primarily with parents and grandparents. Sometimes a tutor can work wonders, but that can be an expensive band-aid that never gets to the root of the issue.
That's why I love my 8 week signature coaching program where I work with you to totally transform your relationship with math so you can confidently support your child through middle school, high school and beyond. Perhaps you had a terrible time with math and really want your child to have a better experience. Or, maybe you enjoy math but your child hates it and you can't figure out how to help them.
While it can be really uncomfortable to examine your own relationship with math first, it is essential. Once we do this, goal setting becomes much easier. We can work on overcoming daily homework battles, understanding and reducing math anxiety, or creating a plan for a child who is struggling. Each week I will work with you towards your goals, sharing information and strategies that are evidence based and easy to implement. I am available between sessions to troubleshoot and suggest something different if you get stuck. Our last session will be about reflection and planning for future math enjoyment and success.
I do not offer help with individual homework assignments. What I do is help you develop a plan to address all of your child's struggles with math. This may include online resources, local options available, or working with the school directly. It may also include working with you to help you respond differently to your child's struggles. Remember, my goal is lasting change. This is definitely a different approach than just getting help for homework from a tutor on an as needed basis.
Since I work primarily with parents, I can help children of all ages. The best time to work with me is when your children are young or at the first sign of struggle. New habits are easier to introduce and change is faster when children are younger. Having said that, there are many different ways to help, so even if your child is older, don't hesitate to contact me. There are many ways to influence how kids of all ages feel about math. As with many other journeys, today is the best day to start!
Although I have tutored students in the past, I am not currently a tutor. I am a family math coach. I work primarily with parents to help them achieve lasting math success. Parents don't need 101 fancy videos or worksheets...they just need a few targeted resources that address their child's unique needs! Sometimes hiring a tutor helps, but it can be expensive. Also, tutoring is often a "just get through the year" situation, which repeats the following year. Many parents find that after working with me, their children's confidence and enjoyment of math improve significantly. Daily struggles decrease, and homework is easier. For families that invest in my 6 week program, both parents and kids discover that they truly are "math people" after all!
I am always very upfront that I am not a credentialed Special Education teacher. I am not qualified to diagnose or treat learning disabilities. I can, however, answer general questions and offer a few resources to help you get you started. Your local public school is the first place to ask for help if you think your child needs Special Education services.
Yes! I love to work with groups. Hands-on, in-person sessions are my favorite and most fun, but I've also presented virtually to groups of various sizes. Other possibilities include interviews, podcast episodes and guest blogging.
